Lowdown Radio Preview: November 10, 2009

Posted in Radio with tags , , , on November 8, 2009 by Steve Murray

In just 48 hours, The Lowdown radio show hits the airwaves with another spectacular episode. The show starts with Jackie and Steve dissecting the new crop of TV shows to see which ones are worth watching and which should be banished to an early demise. In the news, the guys talk about strip hockey and love gone wrong. Entertainment features Jackie’s favourite (allegedly) new single and the legendary Christopher Walken comes from YouTube. The sports game of the week is Toss Up and the guys delve into topics from the usual sports to politics and entertainment. It’s a great half hour of fun and excitement as only The Lowdown can bring. As Steve says on this week’s show, The Lowdown is where men are men and censors are nervous.

The show goes live at around 6:30 PM Eastern. If you’re in the London, ON, listening area, you can listen live on 94.9 FM. You can also listen online at CHRWradio.com/listen.

F1 Off-Season Fallout: Back To The Future

Posted in Sports with tags , , , , , on November 9, 2009 by Steve Murray

The 1970s is informally referred to as the kit car era of Formula One. That was a time where most of the grid was running the Cosworth DFV V8 and a Heyland transaxle (gearbox, differential, and drive axle all in one). Only BRM and Ferrari weren’t running that combination in their cars. Over thirty years after the end of the kit car era, it looks as though we could be heading straight back to that. With the recent withdrawals of Honda, BMW, and Toyota, and the rumoured withdrawal of Renault, we could be headed back to kit car era. Read more »

Sunday Link-Off: Too Hot To Handle

Posted in Link-Off with tags , , , , on November 8, 2009 by Steve Murray

blake-lively-marie-claire-1Blake Lively kicks off another link-dump because, well, isn’t that obvious?

The video of the women’s college soccer catfight has made the rounds of the sports blogosphere. I have to say, though, they impressed me with their drive and tenacity. And, as much as she scares me, if Elizabeth Lambert ever wants to give me a call… (Deadspin)

I thought to myself: What would be almost as good as a picture of Blake Lively to link to? How about Carrie Fisher and her stunt double sunbathing in their metal bikinis? (Sci Fi Wire)

Life lesson: Double check who you’re sending your emails to. For example, if you work for a business school, don’t forward your string of emails with your mistress to the whole school. (Guest of a Guest)

After the jump, tons of Top Gear, the greatest man caves, and some disgraced baseball players surface. Read more »

Entertainment Link-Off: Turn It Up

pixie lott 3Now we return to your regular scheduled programming. That’s right, after a week off, I’m back with the latest Entertainment Link-Off. Steve did an awesome job with the ELO last week and it looks like he didn’t scare you guys away. This week features the songstress Pixie Lott. She’s already a massive hit over in Europe. Now when will she make a stop here in Canada?

After the jump Kick-Ass actually kicks ass, a few movie lists to check out, November Sweeps and a look at how Transformers 2 should have ended. Read more »

The Humanoids: For The Win

Posted in Randominity with tags , , , , , , , , on November 6, 2009 by Steve Murray

There are lots of losers every week. I’m sure most people would include yours truly in that category. I’d imagine that I would classify myself in that category after tonight’s $50 million Lotto Max draw. (Though I’d consider myself a winner if I won a free ticket.) That being said, there are a lot of folks that had good weeks this week. Now watch in amazement as I try to drag them back down into the dregs of loserdom with me. Some people can pull rabbits out of their ass, I can turn gold to lead. Everyone has their own skill set.

Meanwhile, we’re back to being busy on the radio front. The next show is shaping up to be a solid one. Not an instant classic but an above average half-hour of talk for campus radio. Naturally, the Extra will be even better. All sorts of TV talk, love gone wrong and Christopher Walken’s poker face. That goes down on November 10th at 6:30PM. While you’re here or catching up on the radio show, drop by our new buddies at Lion’s Den University. They’re up and coming stars in the blogosphere and a regular stop when I make my morning rounds of the interweb. Read more »

Lowdown Radio Classic: November 13, 2007

Posted in Radio with tags , , , , , , on November 5, 2009 by Steve Murray

While I work on the next episode of the radio show, I thought why not post a classic episode of the show that I really like. This episode goes back to the beginnings of The Lowdown radio show. In fact, it was our second ever episode and you can really tell the difference between then and now. In this vintage episode, Steve talks with Michael Parkin, a UWO economics professor and former president of the Canadian Economics Association, about the fluctuating value of the Canadian dollar. On entertainment, the guys discuss the latest Westlife single, Home, and compare it to the Michael Bublé original. They also tackle the then days old TV and movies writers strike which prompts Steve to call a strike. The show ends with sports which was the NHL quarter-season review and the first time we play Toss Up for the first time ever. In case you were wondering, that game makes a return on Tuesday. As an added bonus, we’ve touched up the episode a bit to improve the sound.

Wednesday Link-Off: Learning Something New

blake-lively-nylon-5When in doubt, Blake Lively is the smart way to go.

So what have we learned about Andre Agassi before reading his book. Well, he took crystal meth and now we know that he was a hustler. (FanIQ)

Want to be on the FOX NFL Pregame show? Then you should review this secret internal memo so you know what you’d be in for. (Sports Pickle)

Hockey is full of weird superstitions. I didn’t know that the order of the team as they walked out of the dressing room was one of them. (Globe and Mail)

After the jump, loads of hockey links, a new way to learn how to drive, and a new way to drive in the snow. Read more »

Not News of the Week

Posted in News with tags , , , on November 3, 2009 by Steve Murray

permanent-marker-robbersAs the Not News seems to prove time and time again, Americans just aren’t that bright. Two men broke into an apartment but were arrested while getting away. Police didn’t have too much trouble matching the men to witness descriptions because their masks were just permanent marker scribbled on their face. The two men, naturally, were drinking before their break-in and, combined with their stupidity, they were easily caught by laughing police. The local police chief says this was easily the weirdest and worst attempt at disguise in his nearly 30 years on the force. Read more »

F1 Abu Dhabi GP: All’s Well That Ends Well

Posted in Sports with tags , , , , , , , on November 2, 2009 by Steve Murray

f1-abu-dhabi-2009-vettel-webber-victoryIt was both a last and a first yesterday at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. It was the last race of the 2009 Formula One season but it was the first race at the Yas Marina Circuit and the first F1 race that started in daylight and ended at night. The adventure into the dusk and desert of the United Arab Emirates was about the only drama heading into this race. It wasn’t helped by Sebastian Vettel walking away for his fourth win of the season in a largely dominant victory. Read more »

jewel-blender-017Welcome to the great link-off experiment. I’m back on the entertainment beat again. Leading things off is Jewel. Anyone else miss her? Not her music, just her.

Greatest comic strips ever. Mashing up classic comics strips with sci-fi characters. (Ryan Dunlavey)

This Star Wars comic proves that the Force is strong with this one. Apparently an adolescent sense of humour isn’t as strong, though. (Bad Librarianship)

The only thing worse than the Harry Potter movies and the last few Harry Potter books is having the name Harry Potter. (Daily Mail)
